Contemporary Global Issues

Course Description

This is an interdisciplinary introduction to contemporary global problems and issues, with emphasis on cultural events that impact all of our lives. Students will learn to explore, analyze and identify local solutions to global issues and problems, through the lens of intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural perspectives. The impact of race, ethnicity and inequality in world affairs, the processes of economic development and globalization, the environmental impacts of human activities, and people's experiences of war and peace will be analyzed. Consideration of various cultural points of view on processes of interdependent changes in our lives at global, regional, national, and local levels will be encouraged.

De Anza will host its annual Enrollment Day event for graduating high school students and their families on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Main Quad and other locations.

Sixteen faculty members were granted tenure by the Foothill-De Anza district Board of Trustees on Monday, during a special celebration attended by Chancellor Lee Lambert and leaders from the college and district. Colleagues, deans and family members were also there to congratulate them.

Four members of the De Anza College community will be honored in March with Excellence Awards from the national League for Innovation in the Community College. They were selected for their outstanding service to the college and its students.

De Anza has received its first-ever grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, providing $150,000 for an ambitious, three-year effort to create and expand oral history programs focused on historically marginalized communities.
