Youth Vote 2008

De Anza is committed to providing information about the issues that are important to our students during the election on Nov. 4.

Throughout the upcoming weeks, the Office of the President, the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement (ICCE) and others will sponsor a series of public discussions, provide occasions for debate, and facilitate voter registration before the Oct. 20 California deadline.

Please join us for these campus events and participate in the Oct. 28 & 29 DASB-hosted Mock Election. And if you are eligible, register and vote!

Campus Events

Panel Discussion on "The Economy and the Bailout"

Join faculty members Mike Gough, Chris Kwak, Byron Lilly, Roger Mack, Dan Salah, Ravjeet Singh and moderator Vice President of Educational Resources & College Operations Jeanine Hawk to discuss the issues.

California Community College Mock Elections

Film Screening: "Engage Her--Getting Minority Women to Vote & Lead"

Explore with this documentary film why the vast majority of Latina, African American and Asian Pacific Islander women in the United States do not vote.

Faculty Panel on 2008 Presidential Elections

Join political science instructors Robert Stockwell and Nicky Yuen, humanities instructor Wendy White, and philosophy instructor Cynthia Kaufman for an engaging panel presentation and discussion in the upcoming Presidential Elections. They will provide political analysis on key policy issues and the cultural dialogue taking place on race and gender. Refreshments served.

Come Watch the Final Presidential Debate!

Join the Speech and Debate Club and speech instructor Alex Kramer for a viewing of the final presidential debate. After watching the debate, take part in a moderated discussion.

Andale Welcome Event for New Students and Their Parents

Latina/o Empowerment at De Anza presents a welcome event for students and parents that will include student-led workshops on activism and voter registration.

Voter Education on Immigration Legislation

The elections have provided a focal point for activity among immigrants and new citizens: rallies and marches, voter registration and get-out-vote efforts aimed at bringing hundreds of thousands from immigrant communities into a new level of civic participation. Panelists from local immigrant rights organizations will discuss immigrant civic participation and proposed legislation impacting immigrant communities. Refreshments served.

Film Screening and Community Dialogue of Brett Morgan's CHICAGO 10

In 1968, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago was beset by protests in the streets. Several youth leaders and other activists organized public protests against the Vietnam war, against what they saw as America's failings. Eight of the leaders including Black Panther Bobby Seale were charged with inciting to riot and brought to trial in Chicago. Mixing animation with archival footage, CHICAGO 10 explores the buildup to and unraveling of the protest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the ensuing 1969 conspiracy trial. Moderated dialogue to follow film screening. Refreshments served.
