COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
                SOCIAL SCIENCES, RESEARCH STRATEGIES, SPEECH AND DEBATE
DEBATE AND CRITICAL THINKING
(CUPERTINO MIDDLE ONLY)
Entering Grades 5 and 6 – A challenge for young people is to present new ideas to solve world issues. Presenting those ideas in a clear, logical and engaging style is a critical skill. This course re nes public-speaking skills and introduces two high school debate events: Lincoln- Douglas and Policy Debate. Students will debate current events, hold an in-class tournament and learn how to be a great speaker and debater.
INTRODUCTION TO HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE RESEARCH AND STRATEGIES

Entering Grades 7-9 – This course re nes public speaking skills and introduces some of the fundamental skills of organized classroom debate, including researching, writing about, and then orally debating
a case. Special focus will be paid to argumentation,

rebuttal and cross-examination techniques. This
course sets a framework for students to develop their reasoning and articulation skills, which are bene cial
to all academic studies. Students will debate current events, hold an in-class tournament and learn how to be a great speaker and debater. Students will learn about Congressional and Parliamentary debate, Policy Debate and Lincoln-Douglas event structures and strategies.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Entering Grades 5 and 6; Entering Grades 7-9
(Offered for two age groups in separate classes) – Students will learn the skills and techniques required
for effective public speaking, including communication skills, eye contact, voice projections, body contact and listening, as well as self-evaluation techniques. Students will practice presenting various types of speeches in front of an audience. Development of self-con dence and poise will be an integral part of this class. The seventh- to ninth-grade course will encounter more mature topics and more frequent critiques than the  fth- and sixth-grade course.
