                ATHLETICS
BASKETBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS
Entering Grades 9-12 – This course breaks basketball down to the fundamental skills that all athletes need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through game- speed drills and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and rebounding. Students will also learn about game strategy. This course is taught by the De Anza College head basketball coach.
COMPETITIVE BADMINTON
Entering Grades 9-12 – This course will train students in the fundamental skills and tactics they need to compete in badminton at the high school level. The emphasis
will be on improving footwork and strokes – including net, drop, clear and smash shots – as well as strategic and tactical awareness. This course is taught by Mark Landefeld, three-time Coast Conference Coach of the Year, and members of the two-time state champion
De Anza College women’s badminton coaching staff.
SPEED TRAINING
Entering Grades 9-12 – Students will perform challenging drills to increase their cardiovascular endurance, using quick-burst and change-of-direction drills aimed at improving footwork. The class will cover the techniques and fundamentals to get faster for any sport.
STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT
Entering Grades 9-12 – Students will perform strength- development exercises, learn proper weight-training form, develop warm-up routines and gain a basic understanding of how to enrich their physical fitness and athletic performance through weight training.
SWIMMING TRAINING AND TECHNIQUES
Entering Grades 9-12 – This course focuses on swimming fundamentals and training strategies. The De Anza College head coach for swimming and diving will teach this course. Students can choose from one of two levels during the same session.
Level 1: Students will practice different strokes for the width of the pool to improve strength, consistency and technique. Students will have the opportunity to learn new strokes and flip turns, while refining any strokes they already know.
Level 2: For swimmers who have already mastered the basics of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, this is an opportunity to receive coaching on improved stroke efficiency, quick and efficient flip turns and dives, and ways to build strength and endurance.
