COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
               LEGO COMPUTER ROBOTICS: MINDSTORMS EV3 [2 HOURS] (CUPERTINO MIDDLE ONLY)
Entering Grades 7-9 – Using the newest technology available from Lego Education, students will gain practical, hands-on experience with science, technology, engineering and math concepts. This course is designed for students who want to expand their programming skills to the next stage using EV3, data logging and CAD software. Students will develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills while learning core engineering principles. Working in teams, students will construct robot designs using sensors and motors. Students will learn programming skills and engineering design with the EV3 “intelligent brick,” using Lego servo-style motors, touch, color, gyro and ultrasonic sensors. This class is great preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as RoboGames and First Lego League. Prior experience in robotics is not required.
PYTHON PROGRAMMING FOR THE RASPBERRY PI [2 HOURS]
Entering Grades 7-9 – This class serves as both a beginner’s introduction to Python programming and a skills-development workshop for intermediate students. Students will apply their programming knowledge to
the Raspberry Pi and peripherals in order to mimic and debug real-world Python applications. Class sessions include time to work on the programs with help from the instructor. Some homework time may be required to complete the lessons. The Raspberry Pi and associated components are included in the class price. After the program, students will keep their Raspberry Pi.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES
SPANISH – BEGINNING ★
(CUPERTINO MIDDLE ONLY)
Entering Grades 5-9 –Students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar, including practical phrases, in a setting that integrates listening, speaking and reading skills. Students will be exposed to the culture and customs of Spanish-speaking countries as well.
SPANISH – INTERMEDIATE ★
(CUPERTINO MIDDLE ONLY)
Entering Grades 7-9 – Recommended prerequisite: Two years of Spanish or equivalent. This course emphasizes conversation and written communication. Students
will further their knowledge of verb conjugation and acquisition of situational vocabulary. Reading and writing activities will focus on public speaking. Students will learn about various cultures, customs and traditions in a motivating and fun environment.
MATHEMATICS
GRADE 5 MATH OVERVIEW ★
Entering Grade 5 – This course curriculum is aligned with Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and is recommended for students entering  fth-grade mathematics. Students will extend their  uency
with addition and subtraction of fractions and their understanding of multiplication and division of unit fractions with whole numbers. Students will be exposed to division extended to two-digit divisors as well as decimal fractions integrated in the place value system, and will enhance their understanding of operations with decimals to the hundredth place. Students will learn problem-solving strategies and deepen their understanding of area and volume.
