Essay 2

First draft due Thursday, February 12

Final draft due Thursday, February 19

5-7 pages, typed, double-spaced, and stapled

For this assignment you will write a research-based argumentative essay about some aspect of work, migration, or both. You will begin by narrowing down your topic and defining a research question that is relevant to the topic. Your essay will argue for a change to a specific policy, law, or rule that governs work, migration, or both. You should belong to a group that either has influence on the specific body that decides on the policy, law, or rule, or is directly affected by the policy, law, or rule that you wish to change.

Your essay should demonstrate that you are aware of different positions and opinions concerning the specific policy, law or rule that is the focus of your essay. You should demonstrate some historical awareness of how the policy, law, or rule has assumed its current form and/or historical awareness about how the groups affected have developed in a way that would require the policy, law, or rule to change. Your essay should be as up to date as possible. You should demonstrate awareness of the groups that would be affected by the change that you argue for and what the effects would be.

Most likely the overall structure of your essay will have two parts, a problem and a solution. You should develop each of these parts through several paragraphs.

The expectations for your essay are very high, and it is important for you to develop a writing process for producing polished and well-informed essays. You are required to post journal entries with your specific topics, research questions, initial theses, and initial research. You are required to receive feedback on an initial outline. You are required to have at least one other student in the class edit a full-length draft of your essay and you are required to edit the essay of another student.

The essay will be graded according to the essay-grading rubric for EWRT1A.
