CD 50 Description of Assignments
Assignment 1: Observation of one licensed early childhood education program and interview with an early childhood professional (80 points)
1. Select one licensed early childhood education program to visit.
a. Observe the program for more than 2 hours
b. Use the “Site Observation Form” to guide your observation and make sure to get detailed information for each criteria
2. Interview an early childhood professional who is working in the program you visited
a. Design an Interview Guide with seven or more questions regarding theoretical framework of the program, program philosophy, mission and values, funding, curriculum, staff development, community participation, teacher skills or any other questions which will help you clarify your understanding about the program
b. Operate the interview and record the answer for each question
3. Prepare a full report of your observation and interview including
a. Introduction (10 points): describe basic information and history of the program (1 to 2 pages)
b. Observation (30 points): use the Site Observation Form as a format to write detailed information for each criterion (6 pages).
c. Interview (20 points): clearly describe your interview questions and accurately record the answer for each question (2 pages)
d. Conclusion (15 points): comment about the program according to your observation and interview. Support your comments with the developmental and learning theories we discussed in class (1 to 2 pages)
e. Appendix (5 points): include your hand written notes, observation forms, brochures and etc., which evidence your efforts. Present them neatly
Assignment 2: Portfolio---Document your own professional growth in the field of early childhood education (30 points)
1. Use a three ring binder
2. Make a nice cover sheet
3. Design a table of contents
4. The portfolio should also include the following sections:
a. Autobiography: Outline the significant relationships and events in your life that led you to choose early childhood education as your career
b. Vision and philosophy statement: explain your vision as an early childhood educator and your dreams as professional. Describe your values for the education of young children and how your values influence your decision of entering the field of early childhood education
c. Self-goals: describe what you want to achieve in your career
d. Resume: include your education, work experiences and references
Transcripts, degrees, certificates or diplomas
e. Course work sample or program plans such as curriculum materials, daily routines and description of the environment arrangement (two of your best works)
f. Professional evaluations: include letters of recommendations from managers, parents or teaching evaluations
g. Professional development record: record the training and course work completed and be sure to note the date of training, the name of the trainer, sponsoring organization and the hours of the training (use the sample sheet as a reference)
h. Literature review and reflections: the literature review must be of 2 or more sources of research. Complete summaries of the literature reviewed and respond to it with a written reflection. When reflecting in writing, summarize the content of the literature reviewed and answer the following questions: What are the most salient or interesting ideas that you have learned and why? What are the implications to your work?

Assignment 3: Complete advising session (10 points)
1. Make an appointment for a 15-minute advising session with Li Wei Sun or any other faculty at the Department of Child Development and Education.
2. Be prepared for the appointment. Your preparation shall include the following:
a. Establish your career goal (tentative or confirmed)
b. Bring a copy of your college transcript- unofficial is acceptable. If you do not have a transcript, bring any other diploma or course documentation that you have
c. Bring the Advising Verification form. Complete the form and sign.
2. Be on time for your appointment
3. Return the Advising Verification form to your instructor
4. A sign-up sheet for advising sections with Li Wei will be available around the second week
Assignment 4: Service Learning (40 points)
1. Complete 12 hours of volunteer time in a selected early childhood professional program.
2. A sign-up sheet for volunteer sessions will be distributed in class the second or third week.
3. Prepare a three-page report of your experience. The report should include the following:
a. Introduction of all the programs you volunteered in
b. Summary of your volunteer experience
c. Analysis of what you learned and the impact on your future work
d. Record of attendance (see attached attendance sheet)
Assignment 5: CDD Student Orientation (10 points)
1. Attend a scheduled CDD Student Orientation and prepare a one-page report. The orientation will be presented twice during the day and once in the evening each quarter. The one-page report should include the following:
a. a discussion of the topics presented during the session
b. an explanation of what you learned from the session relevant to your educational and professional development
Assignment 6: Final Group Presentation (40 points)
1. Form a presentation group with 4 to 5 members before Mid-term
2. Create an ideal early childhood program together
3. Present your program to the whole class
4. The instructor’s evaluation counts for 70% and team members’ evaluation counts for another 30%
