Learn the basics of playing the guitar, including right- and le -hand technique, strumming chords and playing melodies. Instructor Rich Hawthorne will teach you how to play simple blues, rock and folk songs.  is is an absolute beginner’s course, with no experience necessary.  is course
is also recommended for students who have some playing skills but no formal instruction.

Instructor: Rich Hawthorne has been a Bay Area guitar instructor for more than 20 years. He is the co-author of “I’ve Always Wanted to Play Guitar.”
Class requirements: Must be age 13 or older. Students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, who does not need to register. Each student will need a ukulele. Ukeleles can be purchased from the instructor for $80-$120. To purchase, please contact the instructor at least one week in advance at rhguitarist@ sbcglobal.net.
Cost: $109
Materials fee: $15 (payable to instructor)
Dates and times: Sept. 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, Nov. 3 (six Saturdays), 3:30-4:30 p.m.

ASTROPHYSICS FOR EVERYONE (375*)
When you gaze at the night sky, do you
feel a sense of awe? Are you curious about the universe?  is is the class for you!  is nontechnical class explores the role of matter and energy in the underlying structure of the universe and how clouds of gases and dust give rise to stars, planets and solar systems. Close attention will be paid to the sun’s power and its life cycle. Additional topics include the Big Bang theory, gravity, exoplanets, galaxies, black holes, supernovae dark matter and energy.  e class will conclude with current theories about the multiverse and the “ eory of Everything.”
Instructor: Awanish Mishra holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in quantum physics, along with a master’s degree in theoretical chemistry.
Class requirements: Must be age 14 or older. Students under 18 must take this class with an adult who has also registered.
Cost: $84
Dates and times: Nov. 1 and 8 (two
 ursdays), 6-9 p.m.

YOU CAN PLAY UKULELE! (390*)
 e popularity of the ukulele has grown tremendously over the years. Since it is an easy instrument to learn, it can be quickly rewarding. Even if you have no musical background whatsoever, this class will provide the tools and guidance to start playing with relative ease. During the course, students will learn how to hold and tune a ukulele, along with basic chords and melodies,  ngerings, rhythm and tempo, basic reading and music theory.  is six-
