Meeting Notes - May 24, 2011

Review of Notes:

May 17 and May 19 notes were reviewed. The notes of May 19th are amended to say: The “eliminated positions” that were originally slated for hire during the 2010-11 year because they were chosen as part of a Division’s choice to meet their budget reduction numbers are placed in the following order for consideration when the hiring of any position resumes: 1) AS-Diversity, 2) LA-English, 3) Bus/CIS-Business, 4) LA-Reading, 5) PE-Soccer, 6) SSH-Child Development. Retirements and any other hiring requests will fall under another hiring process. It is hoped that hiring will resume in 2 to 3 years.

Group Work:

Teams gathered to discuss their questions and observations about Division proposals.

Outcomes:

A report to the college council will consist of the following recommendations:

1) the IPBT recognizes and honors the work of the faculty and staff in the creation of these proposals;

2) the IPBT does not support the extent of these reductions as they cause grave concerns:

Relative to the college’s stated mission and goals to support diversity, equity and student success of targeted underrepresented groups;

  • a proportional cut to math classes will cause disproportionate burdens to these students;
  • reductions in core English courses and ESL courses (which are often repeated a number of times) will impede student progress at all levels of the college

Relative to the college’s stated mission and goals to support transfer and CTE groups;

  • reductions in general education biology courses in combination with math may cause a ripple effect in enrollments in physics and chemistry courses
  • reductions of this magnitude will also impede the progress of transfer track students as waiting lists (which are already extraordinarily long)

In summary, this magnitude of a reduction would adversely affect, outreach, gateway courses, transfer, certificate and degree attainment with disproportional effects on underrepresented student groups.
