Offering Your Course as Honors
An Honors student is expected to complete an Honors Project consisting of a minimum of 10 additional hours of rigorous course study. If you would like to offer an honors section of your course, please have an idea for a project prepared. Adequate completion of Honors courses will neither add extra points to students' GPAs nor add extra units to the course, but instead will add the title of “Honors” to the course on students' transcripts.
As a part of the new faculty contract, all faculty members can list teaching an honors course as an activity in the "Special Service" section of their PAA.
If you are teaching one of the courses in the list at the bottom of the page and you would like an accompanying Honors section, please email dahonors@fhda.edu with the course name and number no later than 30 days prior to the first class meeting.
If you regularly teach a UC or CSU transferable course that is not on the list at the bottom of the page and you are interested in offering an honors section of your course, please email dahonors@fhda.edu with the course name and number requesting an Honors course outline.
Adding Students to the Honors Section
If your course has an accompanying honors section, make an announcement during the first class meeting expressing the availability of an honors section. In addition, include a statement in your syllabus describing the honors option accessible to students.
All students who wish be in an Honors course must switch to the Honors section by the second Friday of the quarter. Once a student has switched to the Honors section, they may not switch back to the regular section.
To add a student who is already enrolled in the Honors Program,
- Provide the student with an add code for the honors section during the first week of the quarter.
- Instruct the student to drop the regular section of the course.
- Instruct the student to add the honors section using the new Honors CRN and add code.
- Use the course contract from the list of forms to assign an Honors Project to the student.
A student who is not in the Honors Program may take one honors course as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. To add a student who has not joined the program, instruct the student to email dahonors@fhda.edu with their name, student ID, and the course name and number. After the Honors Coordinator confirms that the student has met all the requirements, the student can be added to the Honors section using the same procedure described above.
