Humanizing applies learning science and culturally responsive teaching to asynchronous online courses to create an inclusive, equitable class climate for today’s diverse students. When you teach online, it is easy to relate to your students simply as names on a screen. (Pacansky-Brock et al., 2020, p. 2) In this session we will discuss the four interwoven principles of humanized online teaching which include Trust, Presence, Awareness, and Empathy. We will apply these principles to our syllabus and language we use in our communication with students.

Minimize Cognitive Overload with Intentional Course Design & Teaching Strategies
May 15, 2023 Wednesday from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Register Now!

This session will help you identify and discuss strategies for dealing with cognitive overload. By definition, cognitive overload is a situation where one is given too much information at once, or too many simultaneous tasks. The result is not being able to process information or perform tasks with clarity or efficiency which can produce anxiety. We will review the three types of cognitive load; Intrinsic (how complex the task is), Extraneous (distractions that increase load, and Germane (linking new information with the already stored in the long-term memory). We will outline backward course design and teaching strategies (UDL) including aligning assessments and outcomes with content and accessibility guidelines.
