Faculty Hiring 2020 – 2021

Christina Espinsosa-Pieb notified the committee that there was a dire need of hiring out of cycle faculty positions for the Nursing program. She recapped that the nursing program went through Viability and was determined with some adjustments that the program is viable.

Last week, the nursing Director, Director assistant, and BHES dean met with the Interim President, VPI and FA President and expressed their concern regarding the program’s existence. They explained that 3 tenured faculty members scheduled to retire effective June 2021; 1 tenured faculty member currently is on unpaid leave for the year and it’s not certain of their return; 1 tenured faculty member had let the management know that they’re searching for a job and as soon as they get a job offer they would leave the program. 1 tenured faculty member will be resigning by the end of fall quarter; 1 tenured faculty member is taking a leave of absents effective the end of fall quarter for the rest of the year for a family reason.

Espinosa-Pieb notified IPBT that after checking with DA Senior staff and Chancellor’s cabinet a potential solution is to hire 4 positions using one-time dollars. Christina is seeking from IPBT a permition to use one-time money. She asked the committee to think about it, speak to their constituency groups and bring their input to the next IPBT meeting in January. These positions would not count toward the 8 vacancies currently being discussed.

One of the biggest concerns of the Nursing program is if they won’t have any applicants by the beginning of April or May and at that point, the program’s sustainability needs to be decided.

Faculty Hiring 2020 – 2021

Faculty Hiring - Lorrie is working on the Vacant Faculty list that she will bring to the next meeting. As of today, we have 8 faculty vacancies that we can fill out of 40 requested. These are retirement/resignation only and not SRP (Supplemental Retirement Plan) positions.

The Faculty Hiring Request workbook was presented. The workbook included all the requests from departments, both new and replacement positions along with the justifications that deans provided. The IPBT requested additional context for the request: last hire date, recent retirements, significant changes since program review submission. Lorrie will collect the additional information from the deans and send it to IPBT members via email before the break.
