Student Walkout and March

March 8, 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Next Wednesday, March 14, beginning at 2:25 p.m. – the approximate time of the school shootings in Parkland, Florida – a group of De Anza students will join a national walkout demanding common sense gun laws. Local high school students are also planning walkouts, with many joining De Anza College students in a march to Cupertino City Hall.

We support this action, and ask that you please share details with students. The march is an expression of our students' deep concern, and is not designed to support any candidate or specific proposed legislation

While what happens in classes is, of course, entirely at the instructors' discretion, we ask that you consider taking your class to the march, or not holding any exams or graded assignment at that time, to facilitate student participation. We hope that the walkout -- yet another example of our students' leadership -- prompts deeper conversation regarding gun violence and ways of ending it. Details, including contact information, are below. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Brian Murphy
President, De Anza College

President, Academic Senate

Karen Hunter
