Bio10 Article Lab Assignment

This quarter, you are going to select, read, create a written summary and discuss 2 articles on any current biological topic.  These articles may be from either written or internet sources. Make sure that both your articles are NOT from the same source.

  • The article must be substantial in length and content (not a single paragraph or abstract). If you are not sure if it is long enough, then it probably isn’t.
  • If you cannot find 3-5 new terms in the article, then select another article.  If you find more than 10 terms that you need to define, then choose another article.  
  • It should be dated any time within the last twelve months from today's date. Any earlier dates will not be accepted.
  • All large newspapers have a science section. Go to the library and look through the newspapers or Scientific Magazines. You may need to ask the reference librarian where these are located.  You may also try internet sources such as SCIENCE or Science Daily.

Your assignment 

  • Read the articles
  • Type a 1-2 page summary as explained below
  • Discuss it with a small group of peers during your lab section

Your 1 page write up should include:

  1. Title
  2. Source & date
  3. Author/ Journalist
  4. List and Define 3-5 NEW vocabulary words from the article
  5. Summarize the key points of the article and explain its relevance.  This should NOT be in paragraph form.  Bullet points are fine.  DO NOT WRITE ME A TERM PAPER.

Present this article and lead a brief (5 minute) discussion on this topic with a small group of with your classmates (small group only). Please come prepared with a few questions that will help engage your peers in a conversation. Do not forget to define 3-5 Biological terms when presenting.

HAND IN TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

  1. a copy of the article/or cut out
  2. your 1-2 page write up

Both articles are worth 25 points. Check the lab schedule for exact dates.

  • Appropriateness of Articles: 5 points
  • Written Summaries:10 points (must include copy of article plus typed summary)
  • Presentation in Lab and Class Discussion: 10 points
