Attendance

Within the First 2 Weeks of the quarter you must not miss a class meeting or be late more than twice. More than 10 min. late is considered absent. YOU are responsible for getting any info you either missed by being late or absent.  Most class meetings will be recorded and found in Canvas Conferzoom,  DO NOT ask the instructor!

If you cannot make it to class for some extraordinary reason such as an accident or have an unexpected event such as no internet, then email the instructor or classmate to relay the info before class begins. If not possible before class, a document may be required.

Class attendance is required throughout the quarter. If you miss more than two class meetings or are late more than 3 times, without contacting the instructor, you may be dropped from the class. If you definitely want to be dropped from the course YOU should make sure, you drop yourself. If you do not drop (and I do not) it is still YOUR responsibility. If you were not dropped but you wanted to be, and it is after the drop date, you will still get a non-passing grade that CANNOT be changed.

Required Materials/Access

Text Book

You will need access to the textbook, Precalculus 2 By David Lippman (Links to an external site.) & Melonie Rasmussen (Links to an external site.) . We will be covering chapters 5-8.

You may use the textbook online and print any parts you wish.  Each Module in Canvas has the chapter we are working on in that week.

To purchase the bounded version (approximately 8$) you can: go to:

Chapters 5-9 (Links to an external site.), from Lulu

Chapters 5-9 (Links to an external site.), from Amazon

To use the book online click here (Links to an external site.)  (the download will take a few minutes but ONLY the first time it is downloaded.)  At the top of the page, there is a box where you can type in the page number. Exercises are found after each section within a chapter.

Technology

Online Homework Access:

You will need internet access to the online homework system called myopenmath.  There is no access fee to use the software. Codes and Keys will be available on Canvas, the Getting Started Video.

This program contains assignments with due dates. You will need to look at the calendar on myopenmath carefully and at least twice a week. You will have 3 late passes that can be used on any overdue assignments.  A week before the quarter ends (10th week) you may request 2 additional assignments to be opened, however that will be at the discretion of the instructor.  Do not ask prior to the 10th week.

Once you have created a myopenmath account, please click on calendar to see any upcoming assignments. To start an assignment within myopenmath, go to myopenmath.com, click on the calendar and then click on the assignment.

In some cases, the assignment you clicked will show up at the bottom of the calendar and you will need to click it again to start the assignment.

TI Graphing Calculator or Other Graphing Calculator

Note: if your calculator is other than a TI, you will need to learn how to use it on your own.

Virtual TI Calculator for Free

To support teachers and students during COVID-19, Texas Instruments is providing a free six-month subscription of the TI-SmartVIew CE Emulator Software for the TI-84 Plus Graphing Family.

Students can obtain a six-month subscription for the TI-SmartVIew CE by completing the request form.

The short form can be found in the syllabus within Canvas.

To Rent a Hand-Held TI, consider the following:

Homework

Your homework is mostly online using the software myopenmath described above. You must create an account by Wed. of the first week of class.  Myopenmath assignments within a week’s module are due that Sunday by 11:30pm unless told otherwise.  Myopenmath assignments will listed within weekly modules, however to do assignments go to myopenmath.com outside of Canvas.

In addition, there will be exercises assigned from the textbook and/or worksheets provided by the instructor.

Textbook work and worksheets will appear within collaborative work which is the next topic..

In-Class-Collaborative Work

On many days, you will collaborate with others in an online virtual room.  Groups will receive one or two problems from the previous day’s homework or worksheet. All members in the group are expected to participate.  All members of the group will receive the same grade for the work shown.  One member of the group will need to take a picture of the work done on the white board and upload the file into the group assignment.  Group assignments are labeled G followed by the week followed by a letter.  For instance, G1b represents the group-work assignment for the first week. The letter b denotes that the assignment is the 2nd group-work in that week (G1a was the first group-work assignment).

If your group is not working out for any reason, please email the instructor immediately.  The 15 best scores will be counted in your grade.

Quizzes

There will be short weekly quizzes each week except in weeks that have a scheduled exam.  The quizzes will be either within Canvas or within myopenmath.  The instructor will announce which one. Your 5 best quizzes will be counted in your grade.

Quizzes are based homework and lecture. There are no makeup quizzes.  Do not ask. Class attendance is required so that if you decide not to come, you may miss a quiz.

Exams

There will be 3 exams worth one hundred points each.  There will typically be two parts to each exam.  The first part will be in Canvas or myopenmath (again announced in class) and will require you to upload your work shown by 11:30pm that night. The second part will be group-work, which again requires one group member to upload the picture of the group-work within one hour after the class ends.

Exams are based or homework, group-work, quizzes and lecture.

There are no makeup exams. If you miss an exam your percent on the final will replace that exam score.

Final Exam

A comprehensive exam will be given. If you miss the exam without contacting the instructor before the exam, you will automatically receive a 0% on the final.
