Music 1A Listening Assignment Guidelines

The link to Assignments are at the bottom of this section; read the material below before downloading

These Listening Assignments are meant to familiarize you with the music examples in your textbook. In addition to being an excellent way for you to interact with the music, they can also be an excellent study aid, since test questions will often be derived from your listening assignments.

General guidelines

  • Each question is meant to be answered in the space provided. Be thorough, yet concise in your answers, using complete sentences.
  • Read the material from your textbook regarding the composer and piece(s) in question before answering each question--while information necessary to answer the questions can often be found in your textbook, you must use your own words. Answers copied directly from textbook will receive lowered scores
  • Listen to each recording as you answer the questions. Most questions will require repeated listening.
  • Many questions are based on your own listening experience, sometimes making comparisons to other pieces--be sure to base your answers on your personal observations rather than the textbook's explanation
  • If you work with a partner or group, I expect answers that are your own words, reflecting your own thinking and listening experience. Assignments with material derived from another's work--as well as the original paper--will receive a failing grade. Do not share your work with other students in order to "help them out"--you will both receive a failing grade.
  • Your writing must be very legible-- the instructor will not struggle to read students' writing--if you can't write clearly, type your responses.
    • typed assignments must include the complete questions in addition to your response
  • Your work must be stapled to receive credit--no paper clips or fancy folding.

Completing Assignments:

  • Print each assignment at least 48 hours before its due date; we can then still have time to solve technical difficulties; failure to be able to print assignments is not a valid excuse for a late assignment
  • Assignments are considered late five minutes after class begins
  • If you are going to be absent on the day the assignment is due, Ron will accept ONE assignment that has been pasted to a word processing program, and attached to an email. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL RON ACCEPT AN ASSIGNMENT THAT HAS BEEN SUBMITTED IN THE BODY OF AN EMAIL, nor more than one emailed assignment.
