ICCE Internship Program
Internship Program Guidelines
The ICCE Internship Program is designed to provide students with sustained experiential learning through placement with a non-profit/community-based agency. Students will connect their academic study with community and public service in order to strengthen communities, develop knowledge about public policy, and develop skills in public leadership through a wide variety of projects.
ICCE provides for internship placement in community organizations through the academic year. We work on a quarter system, fall, winter and spring programs. Student interns participate during one of the quarter programs.
Internship Objectives
- Provide a practical and purposeful experience of community service.
- Engage students in working to make a difference in the civic life of our Silicon Valley communities.
- Provide students the opportunity to develop attitudes conducive to effective interpersonal relationships.
- Provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the formal functional activities of a participating organization.
Student Eligibility Requirements
- Student must be in his/her sophomore year of coursework.
- Student must have completed English Writing 1B or English Writing 2 or Philosophy 3 (Critical Thinking).
- Student must have completed at least one Intercultural Studies Course.
Approval of Internship
- ICCE Director and Agency representative will conduct interviews based on an established rubric created by ICCE Director and community partner.
Academic Credit
Interns are awarded academic credit in the following way,
- Enroll in SOSC 80.55S, LART 80.55S or IIS 80. 55S
- A minimum of 4 quarter units/48 hours will be required for the completion of the internship program
Student's Responsibility
- A minimum of 4 quarter units (48 hours of service) will be required for completion of the internship program
- Complete required ICCE and Agency forms, including background check when necessary
- Develop schedule of work and timesheet log
- Be punctual, and work the required number of hours, at times agreed to by you and your supervisor
- Notify the workplace if you are unable to attend as planned
- Behave and dress appropriately to the particular workplace
- Respect the confidentiality of the workplace, its clients and its workers
- Be positive and enthusiastic about the internship; if things are slow, take the initiative, and volunteer for different tasks or other work.
- Discuss any problems with your supervisor and, if necessary, with ICCE staff.
- Maintain a weekly journal that critical reflects upon your field experiences
- Complete end of Internship Evaluation
Internship Site Responsibility
- Provide agency orientation to intern at the start of the internship
- Clearly communicate Intern's duties and responsibilities and expectations of Agency.
- Supervising Intern
- Take part in reflection and evaluation of Intern and Program
- Maintain ongoing communication with ICCE Director regarding interns
- Provide written verification of intern hours
Stipend
- If available, ICCE Director will negotiate stipend with agency.
