Test/Exam Eligibility & Retest Policies

If you are interested in taking the test again, after earning a result from your initial test, please review the subject specific retest policy to determine your retest eligibility.

Math Placement Test

Students may retake the Math placement test one time at either Foothill or De Anza College – not both – within six months of earning the first test result. This policy is set by the Foothill-De Anza Community College District.

Students are ineligible to retest if they have earned a D, F, NP or I grade in the Math course sequence at De Anza.

  • You may enroll in the classes noted from your first placement test or from the retest.

  • Placement test results do not expire. 

  • You may choose to retest within two years from your last recorded placement test result date, if you have not earned a D, F, NP or I grade in the Math course sequence at De Anza.

English Placement Test

Because Foothill and De Anza offer different ESL placement tests, students are allowed one ESL retest at Foothill and De Anza College.

Students are ineligible to retest if they have earned a D, F, NP or I grade in the ESL course sequence at De Anza.

  • You must take the ESL retest within six months of earning the first test result.

  • You may enroll in the classes noted from your first placement test or from the retest.

  • Placement test results do not expire.

  • You may choose to retest within two years from the last recorded placement test result date if you have not earned a D, F, NP or I grade in the ESL course sequence at De Anza.

Biology 40A Exam

After taking the first exam, students cannot attempt the Biology 40A exam if they have enrolled in or have earned a W, D, F or I grade in Chemistry or Biology at De Anza.

  • Test results do not expire.

  • Students who take a Biology 40A exam and do not enroll in Chemistry 30A, 25 or 1A at De Anza are eligible for one retest after six months.

Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A Exam

After taking the first exam, students cannot attempt the Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A exam if they have enrolled in or have earned a W, D, F or I grade in Chemistry or Biology at De Anza.

  • Test results do not expire.

  • Students who take a Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A exam and do not enroll in Chemistry 30A, 25 or 1A or Biology 6A at De Anza are eligible for one retest after six  months.

Results Processing Timelines

Once you see your results posted on MyPortal, you can register for your classes!

Math Results

Placement Test: 2-3 business days

High School Transcript Assessment: Up to 5 business days

English Results

Placement Test: 2-3 weeks

Why the delay? If you did not test directly into English 1A, your essay is being graded by two English instructors. This can take 2 to 3 weeks.

High School Transcript Assessment: Pending the time of transcript submission to the Assessment Center

ESL Results

Placement Test: 2-3 weeks

Why the delay? All ESL essays are graded by two English instructors. This can take 2 to 3 weeks.

Chemistry1A/Biology 6A Results

Exam: 2-3 business days

Biology 40A Results

Exam: 2-3 business days

Step 2: Click on the Registration Tab

Step 3: Look for "My Records" and click on link "See My Placement Test Results"

Step 4: Look for your placement tests results. The courses listed are the courses that you are eligible to enroll in.

These exams, if passed, allow you to enroll directly into the respective science courses:

If you did not earn a passing score, you should enroll in the respective course's prerequisite course:

  • Biology 40A prerequisite course: Chemistry 25, 30A, 1A

  • Chemistry 1A prerequisite course: Chemistry 25 or 30A

  • Biology 6A prerequisite course: Chemistry 25 or 1A
