Aquatics and Swimming

Everyone should know how to swim and be safe in the water. We offer swimming classes for every skill level.

Novice Swimming 

Novice swimming has many different kinds of swim students. Some are new to swimming, including some who have never been in a pool.  (If you are afraid of the water, this is the right class.) Some students in this class will be over their fear and able to swim some, but not quite ready for a beginning swim class in water deeper than they are tall. Others are self taught, or have not swum for quite awhile and want to relearn from scratch. Others know breaststroke, but not freestyle.

This class is self paced with lots of individual help.
 

This class is not just for students in their late teens or early twenties. It includes people who come to De Anza College just to learn to swim, who are in their late twenties through thirties or forties and occasionally much older students.

Once you adapt to the aquatic world, and feel confident enough to swim in water that may be over your head, you are now ready to work on your stroke development and swimming endurance in a Beginning Swimming Class.

Intermediate Swimming classes will help you to further improve stroke efficiency.

By the time you get to Advanced Swimming, you will swim like Natalie Coughlan and Michael Phelps!! (disclaimer - it says like, not as well as or as fast as).

KNES 1A - Novice Swimming

Swimming skills and techniques for the non-swimmer. Global and historical development of swimming as a fitness activity, novice stroke skills, survival methods, overcoming fear of water, and safety will be covered. American Red Cross stroke standards will be followed but adaptations will be allowed based on physical ability, age, strength and gender. Students will review basic exercise physiology and nutrition appropriate to swimming

KNES 1B - Beginning Swimming

Swimming skills and techniques for the beginning swimmer. Global and historical development of swimming as a fitness activity, beginning stroke skills, survival methods, diving from the side of the pool, and deep water swimming will be covered. American Red Cross stroke standards will be followed but adaptations will be allowed based on physical ability, age, strength and gender. Students will review basic exercise physiology and nutrition appropriate to swimming

KNES 1C - Intermediate Swimming

Swimming skills and techniques for the intermediate swimmer. Global and historical development of swimming as a fitness activity, intermediate stroke skills, springboard diving, turns, water safety will be covered. American Red Cross stroke standards will be followed but adaptations will be allowed based on physical ability, age, strength and gender. Students will review basic exercise physiology and nutrition appropriate to swimming.

KNES 1D - Advanced Swimming

Swimming skills and techniques for the advanced swimmer. Global and historical development of swimming as a fitness activity, advanced stroke skills, endurance swimming, racing turns and starts, and spring board diving will be covered. American Red Cross stroke standards will be followed but adaptations will be allowed based on physical ability, age, strength and gender. Students will review basic exercise physiology and nutrition appropriate to swimming.

KNES 2A - Aerobic Swimming

An introduction to the discipline of Physical Education through aerobic swimming. Cardiovascular conditioning for the swimmer who is proficient at the intermediate level. Includes global and historical development of swimming as a fitness activity. Students will review training methods, measurements, safety, individual program design, exercise physiology, nutrition appropriate to swimming, intermediate strokes and turns.

KNES 2B - Deep Water Running

An introduction to the discipline of Physical Education through deep water running including an historical and global examination of deep water running for fitness and rehabilitation. Students will improve fitness through a program of cardiovascular endurance, strength development and flexibility using water based exercise routines and equipment.
