Course Descriptions and Prerequisite Information
The first-year Spanish series consists of three elementary-level courses that share the same textbook: SPAN 1 (for absolute beginners; no pre-requisites), SPAN 2, and SPAN 3. Completion of these three courses fulfills requirements for the Certificate of Achievement—Advanced in Global Studies. In order to begin with a level above SPAN 1, students must complete a prerequisite clearance.
Note: Spanish 3 is only offered once a year, in the spring. If you wish to take it, please plan ahead with this taken into account.
Spanish 1 Elementary Spanish (First Quarter)
- Five units. Five hours lecture (60 hours total per quarter)
- This course fulfills a GE requirement at De Anza (Area C, Sub-Area 2) and for the CSU Breadth (Area C, Sub-Area 2).
- This course is transferable for both the CSU Baccalaureate Level (course #1-99) and for UC (course #1-49)
- It belongs on the Certificate of Achievement-Advanced in Global Studies and the A.A. Degree in Global Studies at De Anza.
Course Description
Introduction to the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking world areas. Speaking, listening, reading and writing language skills at the first level of elementary Spanish are developed within the framework of language as a fundamental expression of culture. Spanish is the primary language of instruction. Language laboratory practice and/or assignments, at home and/or in the language lab, are an integral part of instruction supporting the development of language skills in the areas of pronunciation, structure, syntax, and oral communication.

If you have had previous Spanish coursework or other exposure to the language, please let your instructor know so that s/he can assess your level and confirm whether it is SPAN 1 or higher.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a working command of essential vocabulary and language structures necessary to request and provide, orally and in writing, basic/simple information relating to high-frequency situations in familiar contexts such as greetings, introductions, leave-taking; description of family members, daily activities and hobbies; expression of (dis)likes and of future plans.
- Derive meaning from short, simple texts on familiar topics, relying on contextual clues to extract the gist and some detail.
- Compose comprehensible, simple phrases or sentences about familiar topics to reflect a working command of core vocabulary and language structures.
- Demonstrate a cursory grasp of social protocols and contributions of Spanish-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one’s own culture(s).

Spanish 2 Elementary Spanish (Second Quarter)

Course Description
Development of elementary language skills for oral and written communication using
language structures and functions targeted for the second level of elementary Spanish.
Spanish is the primary language of instruction. Speaking, listening, reading and writing

the cultures of Spanish-speaking world areas. Language laboratory practice and/or

- Derive meaning from short, simple texts on familiar topics, relying on contextual clues to extract the gist and an increasing amount of detail [compared to SPAN 1].
- Compose comprehensible, more complex [than in SPAN 1] sentences about familiar topics to reflect a somewhat consistent command of core vocabulary and language structures.
- Demonstrate an increasingly accurate grasp [compared to SPAN 1] of social protocols and contributions of Spanish-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one’s own culture(s).
Prerequisite
Before SPAN 2, you need to have completed:
- SPAN 1 at De Anza with a grade of “C” or higher, OR
- The equivalent of SPAN 1 at another college with a grade of “C” or higher (clearance needed to enroll in SPAN 2, see below), OR
- One year of high school Spanish with a grade of “C” or higher in both semesters (clearance needed to enroll in SPAN 2, see below)
You need to Obtain Prerequisite Clearance if…
- You completed the equivalent of SPAN 1 at a college other than De Anza or in high school
- It has been more than one year since you completed SPAN 1 at a college other than De Anza or in high school.
- You have language skills (e.g., native or acquired through non-academic experiences) that you believe are at the SPAN 2 level, but you don’t have the coursework equivalent to SPAN 1 as noted above.

Course Description

- Derive meaning from longer [than in Span 2], simple texts on familiar topics, relying on contextual clues to extract main ideas and supporting details.
- Compose comprehensible, more complex [than in Span 2] sentences about familiar topics to reflect a somewhat consistent command of core vocabulary and language structures.
- Demonstrate an increasingly accurate grasp [compared to Span 2] of social protocols and contributions of Spanish-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one’s own culture(s).
Prerequisite
Before SPAN 3, you need to have completed:
- SPAN 2 at De Anza with a grade of “C” or higher, OR

The second-year series consists of three intermediate-level courses (SPAN 4, SPAN 5, and SPAN 6), and the curriculum has more emphasis on reading and discussing texts that reflect the literary, artistic, historical, and geographical aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Due to budget constraints, these courses are not currently offered, and are enumerated purely for informational purposes.
Spanish 4 Intermediate Spanish (First Quarter)
- Five units. Five hours lecture (60 hours total per quarter)

Reading and discussion of texts dealing with the literature, arts, culture, history and geography of the Spanish-speaking world. Review and expansion of the structures, grammatical features and linguistic functions of Elementary Spanish. Development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills at the first intermediate level within the framework of language as a fundamental expression of culture.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an increasingly consistent command [compared to Span 3] of essential vocabulary and language structures necessary to request and provide, orally and in writing, an expanding range of somewhat sophisticated information such as summaries, comparisons and reactions to subtitled movies, transcribed broadcasts and songs; magazines, newspapers, and websites; narration of personal experience; expression of regret about contrary-to-fact situations.
- Derive meaning from longer [than Span 3] texts of increasing complexity, relying less on contextual clues to extract main ideas and supporting details and to interpret some subtleties of the text.
- Compose comprehensible, paragraph-level discourse about familiar topics to reflect an increasingly consistent command [compared to Span 3] of vocabulary and language structures.
- Demonstrate an increasingly accurate grasp [compared to Span 3] of the subtleties in the idiosyncrasies of Spanish-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one’s own culture(s).
Prerequisite
Before SPAN 4, you need to have completed:
- SPAN 3 at De Anza with a grade of “C” or higher, OR
- The equivalent of SPAN 3 at another college with a grade of “C” or higher (clearance needed to enroll in SPAN 4, see below), OR

- Demonstrate a noticeable accurate grasp of the subtleties in the idiosyncrasies of Spanish-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one’s own culture(s).
