Energy Management Certificates and Degrees

We Have Two Degrees For You To Choose From

The Energy Management program has two separate degree offerings for you to choose from. Many of our courses apply to BOTH of our degrees. It is very easy to earn an AS Degree in one of our programs and a Certificate of Achievement in the other.

1) Energy Management and Building Science: Our Energy Management and Building Science Degree focuses on the TECHNICAL aspects of making buildings sustainable and energy efficient. Buildings are one of the main sources of energy use and waste. Urbanization is placing pressure on our cities, buildings, infrastructure and workplaces.

In the next 15 years, there will be 41 cities in the world with over 10 million people living in them. With this explosion in population comes environmental challenges in the built environment.

Energy and other critical resources will be in short supply. At the current rate, we would need an increase in energy production of 45% in the next decade to service the projected increase in demand. Generating energy from traditional non-renewable sources, such as fossil fuels increases greenhouse gases which has a negative impact on climate change. Our options are to cut back on energy use by being more efficient and to offset the energy we use by implementing and adopting cleaner forms of energy such as solar, wind and fuel cells.

In the US we waste 84% of the energy available to us at a cost of roughly $300B each and every year. Companies pay well for employees that help reduce energy costs and eliminate sources of energy waste. We train you to not only make buildings more efficient, but to build a business case for sustainable building ROI that will make decision makers say "YES".

2) Facility and Sustainable Building Management: De Anza will offer the VERY FIRST Facility Management degree in the CCC system. Our Facility and Sustainable Building Management Degree focuses on the BUSINESS related aspects of managing buildings and building operations. There is a heavy requirement on Business related acumen in Facilities Management careers. Many essential skills such as budgeting, program management, contract management, scheduling, building systems, building operations and maintenance and property management/ real estate are desired.

This includes increasing and improving employee productivity and safety, sustainable landscaping, effective cross organizational communications, building efficiency and sustainability, building operations and maintenance, environmental health and safety and cross functional project management.

The average age of a practicing Facility Manager is 49+ years. 30-50% of existing Facility Managers will retire in the next decade. In California alone, there is a need for over 6,000 Facility Managers RIGHT NOW. The Facility Management Industry is depending on the California Community Colleges to help fill this void.
