Biology and Chemistry Exams

We proctor biology and chemistry exams which, if passed, allow students to test out of lower-level biology and chemistry courses.

We recommend that you speak to your counselor before requesting a science exam testing appointment to determine if you need biology or chemistry courses for your educational goal.

Biology 40A Exam

Bio40A Exam Overview

This exam, if passed, allows students to enroll directly into Biology 40A: Human Anatomy & Physiology.

Students that have taken, or are currently enrolled, in the Biology 40A prerequisite courses at Foothill* or De Anza (Chemistry 30A, Chemistry 25 or Chemistry 1A) do not need to take this exam.

Foothill students:

  • De Anza's Bio40A exam is not transferable to Foothill.

  • If you wish to enroll in Bio40A at De Anza after completing the Bio40A prerequisite courses at Foothill, you should submit a prerequisite clearance form to the Evaluations Department upon Bio40A prerequisite course completion.

Online Bio40A Exam

  • You'll have 45 minutes to answer 44 multiple choice questions.
  • A score of 29 or higher is required to be eligible for Bio40A.
  • You'll be allowed to use a simple calculator. All other aids (notes, internet resources, etc.) are prohibited.

To request access to the online exam, email daassessment@deanza.edu with you full name, CWID and the request to take the BIO 40A exam online.

Once you are enrolled in the Canvas BIO40A exam, you will have 2 business days to submit your responses.

You will be notified within 2-3 business days via email when your results have been posted on your MyPortal account.

Bio40A Exam Eligibility & Retest Policy

Am I eligible for the exam?

Students who have not yet enrolled in the BIO40A course prerequisites (CHEM 1A or CHEM 30A or CHEM 25) are are eligible to attempt the exam.

Test results do not expire.

When can I retake the exam?

Students who take a BIO40A exam, and do not enroll in CHEM 30A, 25 or 1A or BIO40A at De Anza, are eligible for one (1) retest after six (6) months of earning their first exam result.

This means that you're not eligible for a retest if

  • You have enrolled in the course's prerequisite (CHEM 1A or CHEM 30A or CHEM 25)

  • You have earned a W, D, F or I grade in Chemistry or Biology at De Anza or Foothill.

  • If it has been less than six months since your initial exam.

Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A Exam

These exams are not available because of the campus closure for the 2020 spring quarter. For more information, visit the Online Spring webpage.

Chem1A/Bio6A Exam Overview

This exam, if passed, allows students to enroll directly into Chemistry 1A: General Chemistry and Biology 6A: Form & Function in the Biological World.

Students that have taken, or are currently enrolled, in the Chemistry 1A and Biology 6A prerequisite courses at Foothill* or De Anza (Chemistry 30A, Chemistry 25) do not need to take this exam.

Foothill students:

  • De Anza's Chem1A/Bio6A exam is transferable to Foothill for Chem1A placement only (see Foothill's Testing & Assessment Center for student exam eligibility rules).

  • Foothill's Chem1A exam is transferable to De Anza for Chemistry 1A and Biology 6A placement (De Anza exam eligibility rules apply).

  • If you wish to enroll in Chemistry 1A or Biology 6A at De Anza after completing the prerequisite course(s) at Foothill, you should submit a prerequisite clearance form to the Evaluations Department upon prerequisite course completion.

New students with no academic record are eligible to attempt the exam one time.

Test results do not expire.

Students who take a CHEM1A/BIO6A exam, and do not enroll in Chemistry 30A, 25 or 1A at De Anza, are eligible for one (1) retest after six (6) months of earning their first exam result.

This means that you're not eligible for a retest if
